Sint – chapter 1

The little bat flew as fast as he could go towards the barn but he knew before he entered that he was too late, his family were dead and the poor little thing spent the night huddled against their bodies sobbing and wishing he had seen the farmer with his dreaded magic potions sooner, the morning sun’s dusky pink rays crept into the barn and the little bat finally nodded off staying on the floor by his mother’s wings.
Night fell with only a smattering of stars to light the night and the little bat slowly awoke to find his family’s body’s had disappeared and he was completely alone, he jumped when he heard a rustle behind him and he slowly turned his ears trying to figure out what he had heard but the shadow that fell on him was quick and quiet and he didn’t even have time to fight before he lost consciousness.
The gray cat chided his ward quietly, “you should not have done that”
The small orange kitten pouted “I couldn’t leave him for his family to find him” she said, gently nosing the black ball at her white paws.
The old cat beside her shook his head but said no more, instead gently lifting the bat and placing it on the kitten’s back before padding off with his ward following him.
The little bat woke for the second time that night and lay still trying to figure out where he was when he smelled a distinct feline oder, he froze terrified but the cat had noticed he was awake and came up beside him “Hi! I’m Nora” said a female voice excitedly “I hope you don’t mind I brought you here, I didn’t want to leave you all by yourself and you’ll be safe here with me and Kakon, he’s my guardian and he says a bat wouldn’t want to be here with a cat but our names rhyme and isn’t that cool?” the fluffy kitten said all in one breath.
“Um, sure?” replied the bat carefully.
“What’s your name?” asked Nora.
“Clarksint” he answered “but, you can call me Sint”
“Okay! You want to play?” she asked practically bouncing off the walls.
“Nora! Leave our guest alone child, he may want to take it easy for the rest of the night” commanded Kakon.
“Yes sir” said the kitten regretfully.
Sint sat up slowly “Why did you really bring me here?” he asked.
“I told you!” answered Nora impatiently.
“But I don’t think yu told the truth” Sint said “I can usually tell when someone is lying you know”
Kakon smiled to himself “maybe the prophecy is true” he thought looking at the little bat sitting beside his Nora as they argued about whether she was telling the truth or not, “enough” he said gently “Nora we owe him the truth and he must hear it eventually” he sighed “your family has joined the ranks of the undead they seek revenge against any they believe have wronged them”
Sint looked between him and Nora as though trying to figure out if he was kidding but Kakon was serious and Sint realized it and slumped down “what do we do?”
“We hunt them and kill them” said Nora nodding to a stack of stakes piled on the floor.
Sint’s eyes filled with tears again but he nodded “alright” he whispered.
Their work was bloody, hard and long because after all, bat’s weren’t the only vampires in the world.
