Google Maps Street View

Now, I’ve known for a while about Google Map’s “Street View” feature (it normally doesn’t work for the places I map) but today I discovered it goes a bit farther than just being able to see your local Wal-Mart from the comfort of your living room (if for some odd reason you would want to….); you can also see far away places such as the Everest Base Camp or the Swiss Alps.

Google Maps with Street View lets you explore places around the world through 360-degree street-level imagery. You can explore world landmarks, view natural wonders, navigate a trip, go inside restaurants and small businesses – and now even hike the Grand Canyon! Browse the gallery to see collections from around the world

Today I spent the afternoon touring the Palace of Versailles; and as much as I would love to actually be there this might almost have been better (certainly easier on the budget!) because I could get right up next to the paintings, I could climb over the velvet ropes to see the detail on the beautiful screen in one corner of a room, I could get so close to the lovely ceilings that in real life my head would have brushed the chandelier! It was wonderful and breathtaking to be able to do all that right here at my computer desk; and Versailles is just the tip of the iceberg! You can tour everything from the White House to the Amazon, the Ocean (seriously!) to NASA, the Colosseum to Peterhof Palace. There are a few miniscule complaints like having to be patient while it loads and if you click your mouse to much on the picture it might get blurry…. but it usually straightens out pretty quickly so all in all a great experience! Great job Google! 🙂 Can’t wait to see what I’ll be exploring next.
